Some years ago I had to read The Bishop by Chekhov, included in the anthology was a review by a leading literary critic. By secular critical standards it was (is) a very good review. The critic had dutifully rifled through all the available primary and secondary literature on the story; he had studied the various drafts of the story. Yet his conclusions, where they were not beside the point, were wrong because he failed (refused?) to take into account the Orthodox Spiritual tradition. His ignorance blinded him to unmistakable metaphorical and symbolic signals in the story. Dr. Sopko's essay is a small step in the rectification of this scholarly abuse.
